Dietary Supplements History

Up to ten thousand B.C, the main source of energy for humans was plant and any seafood that people could catch using simple equipment. Later hunters contributed a great deal to the food we eat today. But the difference in then and now is that they ate all parts of an animal including the thyroid glands and the same goes for the plants.

As we ascended into civility we started leaving out certain things from our diets thus giving rise to many new symptoms and diseases. It was not until the nineteen-hundreds that a scientist discovered the cause of these diseases (deficiency of Vitamins) while researching a disease called Beriberi. While many Vitamins were then incorporated into our daily diets others such as those obtained from thyroid gland were not very popular.

This was when supplements came into existence. The Vitamins and Minerals that were difficult to obtain from nature were made artificially by humans or extracted from the natural substances and made into capsules called dietary supplements.

What are the Dietary Supplements?

  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Herbs

Why do we need them?

One thing the dietary supplement manufacturers are not allowed is to promise their customers that the product they are selling prevents, cures or treats any disease. The main reasons why we do need the dietary supplements are summarized below,

To make up the Nutrients

The basic aim of these dietary supplements is to make up for the nutrients that you lack from your diet. But this in no way means that you start replacing all the food that gives you nutrition with dietary supplements.

Be sure you eat a variety of food as well because there is no better way to get nutrients than from the natural sources themselves. And it is better that you have been prescribed the dietary supplements that you are now using by someone professional because they know better how to discern the symptoms you may be showing. Or if giving you certain supplements should aggravate your health conditions or not. For instance, a pregnant woman should never be taking Vitamin A supplements. This may cause neurologic dysfunction in the child. You have to be sure that the dietary supplements you are taking are correct for your situation.

What Dietary Supplements to take?

There are a thousand supplements out there and many of them are just a fail.  If you are going to be taking supplements then you should be aware of the different varieties present out there. Only try the ones which you are absolutely certain about. Try not experiment in this situation, because your body does not need that game to be played.

So if you are not willing to spend thousands of rupees on testing which dietary supplements work for you and which doesn’t, especially the bodybuilders here is an easy guide to different dietary supplements.

These are basically taken when you are preparing your body for the onslaught of dietary supplements you are going to take. When selecting a multi-vitamin the first and the foremost thing taken into consideration should be your allergies.
