 Depression is a long and dark road towards self-destruction and loneliness. But you need not walk through that hell alone. Depression was officially acknowledged as a mental health problem almost 80 years ago. Since then countless people have been diagnosed with this mental health problem.

Depression affects your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, relationships, activities, interests, and many other aspects of life. Someone with this problem often has trouble functioning in the ordinary activities of daily living. They are painful not only for the victim but also for their family and friends. An episode of depression may last weeks, months, or longer. Many people have repeated episodes over time and feel well in between—the pattern is unique to each person.

Depression in the 21st Century

 This is one of the biggest health challenges the world faces. At the turn of the 21st century, there was a boom of cases being diagnosed with this mental health problem. More and more people are drowning in the black sea of depression. More than 350 million people worldwide suffer from this disorder. One in five people will experience a period of depression in their lives, and it is the leading cause of disability worldwide.


Over the years, the occurrences of depression have more than doubled. According to reports, today 1 in 10 American has faced clinical depression at least once in their lives. Amongst these, 80% of the victims do not seek medical help.

Reasons For Increased Depression Rates

So what’s the reason behind these rapid increases in depression rates? Living standards and wages are increasing, but people are getting unhappier by the day. First of all, a general rise in the overall rise in psychopathology could be a reason for this phenomenon because psychiatric disorders have high co-morbidity.

Drug and alcohol use

Drug and alcohol use and then abuse is often found in conjunction with depression. An estimate recorded the lifetime prevalence of substance use disorders in the US to range from 10.3% to 26.6% with an increased lifetime risk amongst the younger people.

Anxiety Linked To Depression

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorders and are highly co-morbid with mood disorders such as depression. Anxiety in college students and children has increased by almost one standard deviation between the period of 1950 to 1990. There is an alarmingly increasing trend of an overall deterioration of mental health. Hence, it also allows the possibility of rising rates of depression.

Changes In The Diagnostic Criteria

One of the main reasons behind the increase in depression cases recently is the changes in the diagnostic criteria that now identify a wider range of symptoms that can be present in a person suffering from depression.It now misclassifies normal responses of sadness as a mental disorder.


Awareness, acceptance, and opportunity it holds

From a couple of years, people have become more aware of the existence and threat of mental illness. Due to that, people are starting to accept it a little more. The stigma attached with it is slowly peeling off and people are becoming more aware of the perils of being depressed. Because of that, it is easier to talk to people about it. So don’t worry about talking to your loved ones about it. You might think that it is hard to open up to other people about how you’re feeling—especially when you’re feeling depressed, hopeless, ashamed, or worthless.

It’s essential to recall that everybody battles with emotions like these at some time. They don’t mean you’re powerless, generally imperfect, or not good enough. Tolerating your sentiments and opening up about them with somebody you trust will help you feel less alone.

Regardless of what it feels like, people love and think about you, and if you decide to talk to them about your feelings and condition, then they will be very accommodating to you. Some people think that their miserable emotions will aggravate and annoy the people around them, however, the opposite is true. It is extremely useful to communicate your stresses to somebody who will listen and care. They don’t have to fix you, they just have to listen to you.

Being aware of yourself allows you to

  • Get out of our heads and learn to experience the world directly, experientially, without the relentless commentary of our thoughts. We might just open ourselves up to the limitless possibilities for happiness that life has to offer us.
  • See our thoughts as mental events that come and go in the mind like clouds across the sky instead of taking them literally. The idea that we ‘re no good, unlovable, and ineffectual can finally be seen as just that–an idea–and not necessarily as the truth, which just might make it easier to disregard.
  • Start living right here, in each present moment. When we stop dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, we ‘re open to rich sources of information we’ve been missing out on information that can keep us out of the downward spiral and poised for a richer life.

  • Disengage the autopilot in our heads. Being more aware of ourselves through the senses, the emotions, and the mind—can help us aim our actions where we really want them to go and make us effective problem solvers.
  • Sidestep the cascade of mental events that draws us down into depression. When awareness is  cultivated, we may be able to recognize at an early stage the times we are most likely to slide into depression and respond to our moods in ways that keep us from being pulled down further.
  • Stop trying to force life to be a certain way because we’re uncomfortable right now. We’ll be able to see that wanting thing to be different from how they are right now is where rumination begins.
